Women with Wings: Right-brain Consciousness and the Learning Process in Balkan Dance

Artistic traditions of Eastern European village women, including songs, dances, and textiles, embody a learning process which activates both the right and left sides of the brain. These interwoven arts form a system of preserving and passing on wisdom which for many centuries has existed outside of, and parallel to, the literate academy. One key motif, the woman with wings, appears repeatedyl in dance, myth, song, textiles, and archaeological artefacts, often associated with life transitions, transformation, creativity and joy.
